Woman trades broom for stardom

ETHIOPIAN housemaid Mahlet is changing her name to Maha and cutting her first video clip after proving to her Iraqi boss that she can sing better than she can clean.

Three years after she left her native Ethiopia to work as as a housemaid for prominent Kurdish musician Halcout Zahir, the 20-year-old woman is almost a household name in the northern autonomous region of Kurdistan.

Her break came when Iraq's musical phenomenon Dashni Murad - dubbed the 'Shakira of Kurdistan' - discovered her.

Murad was sitting in the maestro's recording studio waiting to see Zahir when she heard Mahlet sing while cleaning the house.

Mahlet's voice enchanted her and she urged Zahir to audition the young woman.

'I asked her to sing for me and I couldn't believe my ears. Her voice is beautiful,' said Zahir. The rest is history. Mahlet became Maha.

But, in last year’s contest there was a monster of a player in Fernando Miyata:

its amazing the amount of different techniques he managed to throw into that song & still sound so good..

strangely, he didn’t win the 2008 contest, i wonder why?

was at funan yesterday, chanced upon this “rockband” contest being held there…..

sometimes i wonder why the kids don’t spend the time, money and effort on the real deal…especially those playin guitar & bass..i can’t see how pressing some buttons on a stick can help you learn how to play a real guitar….though, i do agree that the singer & drummer would probably improve to a certain extend.

& of cause, playin the real stuff do look alot cooler :D

for those who think that real instruments are expensive, yes & no..

prices of entry-level guitars have come down by close to 50%, with the increased number of guitar shops & more budget brands available..you can easily purchase a guitar & amplifier pack for under Sing$300 compared to when i first started playing, the cheapest i could find was Sing$499.

Unlike the current Guitar Hero game, Disney's Star Guitarist uses a real guitar, you get a 3/4-sized Disney guitar made by the Washburn company.

But you can also string your very own guitar with the special strings which are included with the $200 game which will be released for both PC and Mac.

This looks aot more practical compare to the lameass plastic buttons of the current game.

Jane Birkin pens "Aung San Suu Kyi"

Singer, Actress, Film director Jane Birkin has written a song for Aung San Suu Kyi in her new album "Enfants d’hiver". She’s involved in a campaign for Aung San Suu Kyi’s release and a plea for governments to pull out their investments in Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi is a pro-democracy activist and leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma. She is currently under detention, with the Burmese junta repeatedly extending her detention.
