The death of Mia Zapata [1965-1993]

Mia Zapata was the vocalist of the punk band, The Gits.

The Gits were formed in 1986, Zapata was raped & murdered just as they were gaining popularity & mainstream attention in 1993. They disbanded after her death.

Zapata’s murderer, Jesus Mezquia was only convicted 10 years later in 2003 when the police matched his DNA to a saliva sample taken from Zapata’s body.

Jesus Mezquia was sentenced to 36-years in prison, the maximum sentence under Washington State Law.
