Effect Pedals #34 -Yamaha Magicstomp
First Impressions:
Modulations sound quite analog & “organic”, has some wacked-out effect patches like one that sounds like a cat, and some others that are great for ambient music.
Distortions are decent at best, but I didn’t get this for the gain sounds.
Software is easy to use, but here’s the downer: the software only works with WinXP, I tried it with Win7 it doesn’t run (although the magicstomp website indicated Win7/Vista/XP!)
Overall, a quality multi-effects pedal, I tried the Line6 M9 before buying this, the M9 sounded too digital to me (plus, I still have reservations about buying Line6 products after my KB37 broke down for no reason!)
Size comparison with my main gain box: AMT DistStation
ACER AX3950 i65MR41T
Didn’t want the hassle of assembling my own PC this year so I went out and bought a “branded” one.
The price of PCs have really gone down, I remember the 1st PC we bought cost around $3000 (Compaq higher-end), the 2nd about $2300 (Acer mid-range), the 3rd about $1800 (self assembled mid-range, exclude monitor)
This Acer cost $1399 (mid-range)
The number of branded PCs also seem to be cut down to just 2 big players: Acer & HP, these were the 2 brands I saw in most of the shops I visited.
Comes with wireless mouse/keyboard, 23” LED monitor, 1TB HDD, 4GB memory, Nvida geforce GT420, Windows 7 home..
Compact CPU
Slim LED
Setting Up the OS…
Not sure about the other brands, but Acer does not include system restore discs anymore, I had to burnt the system restore & bundled software onto my own empty DVDRs during startup.
Size comparison with my old system:
The 23” LED monitor is great for viewing my long excel spreadsheets, dont have to freeze panels anymore!
Samsung G3 Station [1TB]
First Impressions:
As there is no ON/OFF switch it is best to connect the HDD to the PC and turn both “on” at the same time, I tried plugging in the usb to PC when the PC was already running and it kept losing connection.
Box contains USB cable, Power cable & Instructions.

My Rating: 3/5
Rule No. 1 [2008]
A vengeful ghost returns to wreak havoc on the police officer who killed him.
My Rating: 3/5
A Battle Of Wits [2006]
This is quite a long film, running time is over 2hours.
It stars Andy Lau as “Ge Li”, a Mohist.
According to Wikipedia, Mohism is a chinese philosophy developed by the followers of Mo Tzu.
Some important Mohist beliefs include impartial caring, opposed to any form of aggression (especially war), being thrifty, opposed to music and rituals (because they were expensive, and the common folk suffered for the royalties extravagance).
I’m not sure if all Mohists are experts at warfare, but that seems to be “Ge Li”s specialty in this film. He successfully helps the Liang defend against the Zhao despite only having a fraction of their military strength.
Unfortunately, the King of Liang assigned his general to kill “Ge Li” after being mislead by his advisor to believe “Ge Li” would stage a revote given his popularity with the people.
I shall not reveal too much of the story, do check it out yourself this is a pretty decent film.
My Rating: 3/5
Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon [2008]
This film is about Zhao Yun aka Zhao Zilong, one of the Five tiger generals in Liu Bei’s camp.
The story starts from when Zhao Zilong enlists into the army as just another unknown soldier through his various promotions to the status of General, after rescuing Liu Bei’s son single-handily battling past a swarm of enemy soldiers and still having the composure to steal Cao Cao’s sword.
My Rating: 3/5
The Stool Pigeon [2010]
First and foremost this is a Cop & Robbers story, but it also has several subplots about love & friendship of the main characters Ghost (Nicholas Tse) & Inspector Lee (Nick Cheung).
Some review sites have deemed the subplots unnecessary, but I feel they add color to the film…without the subplots it’ll just be another cop & robbers story.
My Rating: 3.5/5
Gallants [2010]
This modern kung-fu comedy started off nicely but became quite boring about 30-mins in.
Not much of a storyline and not much of a cast, half of the film features middle-aged folks fighting each other.
My Rating: 2.5/5
Connected [2009]
A fumbling debt collector saves the family of a witness from corrupted police officers.
